Stone Dressing, Stone Carving and Stone Fixing

Stone Dressing describes the working of the hewn stone into a smoothed dimension stone, normally for quoins or keystones. Stone Carving is an ancient and artistic activity, ranging from prehistoric rock carvings to armorial panels and modern gravestones. Stone Fixing involves the physical act of inserting the dressed stone into the building.

The manipulation of stone requires great skill and attention to detail. It requires an understanding of architectural drawings, traditional materials and methods as well as a flair for creativity and design. More importantly, it demands a commitment to good site practice and a thorough understanding of client requirements.

LTM stonemasons are respected for their commitment to high quality workmanship and client satisfaction. We have the skills to take your project from inception to completion, from site inspection and outline schedule of works through to the production of scale drawings and material specification. LTM ‘dressing’ masons are trained to select and shape a suitable building stone, designed to the right bedding plain and hand tooled to the desired profiled finish. Our team of ‘fixing’ masons organise the site, ensuring the careful removal of material and preparation of the background masonry. LTM stonemasons are trained in both modern techniques and traditional methods and materials in order to ensure safe and effective conservation practice.
