Brechin Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) aims to repair and enhance the historic buildings for public benefit by using traditonal methods, skills and materials. It also aims to support and improve skills of both employed and unemployed.

Angus Council approached Laing Traditional Masonry late in 2009 to assist with the repair to the Cathedral Wall on Channonry Wynd, Brechin. The boundary wall to the Cathedral is around 50 metres long and has fragments from the pre-reformation church previously located on the site. The project was funded by the City of Brechin Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) grants scheme, with grant assistance from the heritage lottery fund and Angus Council.

LTM delivered training on the traditional re-pointing techniques and remained on hand to guide the team through the project, it was a great success and following from this project, Brechin THI hope to replicate similar projects to further areas of need.

“This is the first of a series of intensive traditional skills training courses set to run during the lifetime of the Townscape Heritage Initiative. The aim is to assist in upskilling of out of work local individuals, whilst enhancing the centre of Brechin, thereby leaving a sound inheritance once the THI has finished. The opportunity to tap into the skills of LTM will undoubtedly offer excellent added value.” - Sarah Kettles, Project Manager, City of Brechin THI.
